Being LGBT in ASIA

STORIES OF BEING ME: Friends and allies, let us all commemorate this year's International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia by attending this screening of several short films that deal with the lives, issues and challenges of LGBT people across Asia. We hope to see you all at the UP Film Center tomorrow 16 May (Friday) 5:30PM. This fabulous rainbow event is free and open to the public, so bring your friends and share this message to as many people as you can. Kitakits!

B/Proud featuring Perci Cendaña of UP Babaylan

Featured in this Pride Month special from Bench/ (http://bit.ly/BenchPrideMonthSpecial) is our very own alumnus, former Punong Babaylan (AY 1994-95), the very first openly gay USC Chair, and now National Youth Commissioner Perci Cendaña.

Also featured in the special are our friends at the Ateneo Dollhouse and Alex Castro from the Proud to be LGBT Campaign.

Happy Pride!

#100HappyGays

"You can’t deny the strength in numbers—strength necessary for a war that’s surprisingly still fought today. When Philippine church and state think homosexuality can be suppressed and many Filipinos consider it a joke, it helps to present a reality that’s clear, vivid, and as solid as the number 100.

The B/PROUD campaign was born from this need to overpower narrow-mindedness and empower the fearful and restrained. B/BLOG gathered 100 LGBT folk across Manila’s ambitious new crop of establishments to show queer society out, about, and standing dignified with a rising city."

On this day in particular, we encourage everyone to increase awareness, add to the discourse, and campaign for the acceptance of our family, friends and colleagues, whatever their orientation or gender identity/expression. It is our sincerest hope that today -- and every day forward -- everyone freely enjoys the human experience of loving and living, without the shadow of fear or stigma.

UP Babaylan : Pride Week 2013: Live Free. It's Safe in U.P.

Pride Week 2013: Live Free. It's Safe in U.P.

Every June, it has been a tradition for the University Student Council, UP Babaylan, and other gender advocates, to come together and celebrate the annual Pride Week. For the past years, it has been organized to campaign for important legislations and policy proposals such as the Anti-Discrimination Bill that shall safeguard the rights of the LGBT Community. This year, the theme for the celebration is "Live Free. It's Safe in UP". We would like to project the University of the Philippines as a place that's safe for the LGBT Community and we would want to influence other institutions to do the same. Watch this video and find out more!

UP Babaylan x AKSYON News5 : GAYS AT LESBIANS, OUT OF PLACE PA RIN?

Jill Tanaka, UP Babaylan Treasurer, was interviewed for AKSYON News5's feature on the Pew Research Center publication about the Global Divide on Homosexuality. To watch the video, click HERE.

Read the full copy of the report here: The Global Divide on Homosexuality.

UP Babaylan would also like to take this opportunity to correct and inform all media practitioners, that the term "third sex", which was used by the reporter in this video, is not politically correct. LGBT (which stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) is the collective term that should be used when addressing the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community. Again, we thank you for bringing our cause to a wider audience. Let us work towards a more informed society, so that equality will soon be within the reach of the LGBT community. Thank you!

UP Babaylan : A Toast for IDAHO 2013.

"Nothing in the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious idiocy." - Martin Luther King, Jr.

The LGBT community has had much to celebrate in the last year. In the Philippines alone, Cebu, Angeles and Davao join a growing number of cities with anti-discrimination ordinances. Denmark, Uruguay, France, New Zealand and Brazil now accord the same marriage rights to same- and opposite-sex couples. Institutions both large and small have begun to take on LGBT-affirmative regulations. Just as policy has evolved to cater to the entire spectrum of society, so too has the discourse in public and private spheres. We are undeniably making steady progress toward a more informed and inclusive world.

University of the Philippines Babaylan, the premiere LGBT student organization of the UP system, takes pride in its legacy of educating to end hate and indifference. The last 20 years have been a journey with the UP community to end ignorance, foster discourse, and create a more humane, more just society for everyone.

We pledge to continue this legacy.

UP Babaylan is one with the LGBT community across cultures and borders in this festive commemoration of each new step taken and new victory won. But let us not rest on our laurels. Last year, our battle cry was for gender-sensitive policies in the places where we study and work. Our vision is to make every office and classroom a safe space for our LGBT brothers and sisters. We are making progress, but the trip is far from over.

Let us keep educating. Let us keep informing. Let us keep ending the hate. A safe, inclusive world might not be here yet, but now -- more than ever -- that dream is within reach.

Today we raise our glasses to thank our allies -- LGBT and straight alike -- for all their hard work, without which the last year's milestones would not have been possible. Let us toast to the victories we have earned, and the victories that we will earn in the coming year.
